Mystery Shoppers can be referred to as Consumer or ‘Secretive Shoppers’, Consumer Experience or Evaluation, Anonymous Audits, Virtual Customers, Investigative Shoppers, Secrecy Shoppers, Auditors, Evaluators, Data Recorders or even Price Checkers.
Important note, there are some states that may require a professional investigator license to work as a mystery shopper. If you live in states Florida, California, Nevada, or Massachusetts, you may be required to obtain a work card or be a licensed investigator. Therefore, this book should not be your only source of information. You should contact your state government licensing office to obtain current information on all professional licenses required to perform contractual mystery shopping assignments. The knowledge and research provided derives from actual mystery shoppers, each with a minimum of 11 years experience, including valued sources from respected associations, schedulers and organizations in the retail industry.
For example, I have been associated with mystery shopping for most of my lengthy and extensive retail experience. My father owned variety stores and gift shops throughout the United States, and I functioned as his ears and eyes in mystery shopping and price checking other department stores, gift and jewelry shops. I studied and reviewed what products sold in volumes, weekly or daily sales, special discounts and what items sold the least. Additionally, I compared items and prices. Observably, while mystery shopping, I learned a great deal about customer care, quality employee participation, lack of service and consumer appreciation. Moreover, I perceptibly noticed the environment, and if it was welcoming, displeasing or enjoyable.
In addition to my experience, I include my sister’s 10 plus years knowledge, research and expertise in mystery shopping since 2000. She currently is a certified mystery shopper and works for many established companies, restaurants, focus groups, and associations that are respectfully recognizable to very seasoned mystery shoppers.
Moreover, I provide the knowledge and information from an in-depth interview with a skilled and expert mystery shopper.
Mystery shoppers are required to sign a confidential agreement with companies they contract their services. This confidentiality prevents and restricts specific names of any particular mystery shopper in any particular example and or resource throughout this book.
The material and content included in this book provides information for any novice mystery shopper to become familiar with facts, and fully understand how to get started in the investigative shopping industry.
Why would a business hire shopping investigative services?
The actual secret shopping experience and recorded data resulting from the investigative process becomes the principal tool used by market researchers to measure a variety of factors in managing quality retail services, promotions, direct employee to customer interaction; and a vast number of other key issues involved for motivation in retail businesses.
Clients hire diligent mystery consumers to interact as a normal customer and then report on their encounter. This recorded action, by a mystery shopper achieves an important role in managing and determining retail factors for quality goods and superior services.

Shopper Guidelines
You must make a phone call prior to the visit to verify the hours of business. During the call, a brief product inquiry should be made for short phone assessment. During the on-site visit, you need to interact with a sales associate. You will need to take an exterior photo of the store an upload it the report.
The shop must be performed during these hours: Weekdays 8am-5:30pm, Sat 8am-4pm.
Make sure to submit your survey by MIDNIGHT of the day you shop.
